120 = 2 x 60
= 2 x 2 x 30
= 2 x 2 x 2 x 15
= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 5
To find the LCM of 12 and 60, write out the prime factorization of each and determine the greatest number of times that each prime factor appears in the prime factorization of either 12 or 60.
12 = 2 x 6 = 2 x 2 x 3
60 = 2 x 30 = 2 x 2 x 15 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5
The LCM is the product of 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 = 60
To find the LCM of 2, 3, and 4 use the same approach as we did above:
2 = 2 x 1
3 = 3 x 1
4 = 2 x 2
The LCM would be 2 x 2 x 3 = 12
