The effect of the k value within the argument of a function, when k>1, is to horizontally compress the graph of the parent function.
For example, if parent function is y = x, you have a straight line passing through the Origin at a 45 degree angle, if the scales on the x and y axes are identical.
Then y = 2x would be compressed in such a way that the angle of the parent line would be increased, thus making this daughter line steeper, or horizontally compressed.
