-3 ≤ x < 4 and 4 ≤ x ≤ 5

covers the area -3  ≤ x ≤ 5

 

but tells us nothing....

 

If this is f(x) = 3x-1 for -3  ≤ x ≤ 5

then we can't find f(6) because

we have no information as to the nature

of the variable outside the range from -3 to 5
