one lane on a small car ferry is 70m long. one metre must be left at each end of a lane for safety. the length allowed for one car is 5m. let c be the umber of cars in a lane. what is the inequality that defines c?

We have 70 m but leave 1 m

clear at each end.  This means we

have a 68 m space in which to

make the parking spaces.

 

The spaces are 5 m each.

 

5c ≤ 68 is your inequality

 

c ≤ 13 3/5

You can put a maximum of 13 cars

per lane.  This will leave 3/5 of a

space or 3 meters.  If you

distribute the extra space equally

to each side to increase the safety

zone then each safety zone will

have another 1.5 m so the 

final disposition is 13 spaces

of 5 m each with a 2.5 meter

safety zone on each end.
