Michel has 5 times as many stamps as Tina. How many stamps must Michel give to Tina so that each of them will have 150 stamps?

Let t = # Tina's stamps

 

m + t = 300.  together they have 300 stamps

                     since 150+150 = 300

 

m = 5t    Michael has 5 times as many 

              stamps as Tina

 

5t + t = 300

6t = 300

t = 50

 

m = 5t = 250

 

If Michael gives Tina 100 stamps they

will both have 150
