r = number of red

 

total bought = r + p

but r = p

so

total bought = 2p

then he gives away 18 pink leaving

p - 18 = r/3

 

3(p-18) = r

In order to solve, use substitution to get the equation in one variable.

r = p

therefore;

 

3(p-18) = p

3p - 54 = p

3p - p = 54

2p = 54

p = 27

 

27 pink roses + 27 red roses = 54 roses total
