Janna and Eve spent $86 altogether. Janna and Anne spent $104 altogether. If Anne spent twice as much as Eve, how much did Janna spend?

Let E = amount Eve spent

Let A = amount Anne spent

 

1)  J + E = 86

2)  J + A = 104

3)  A = 2E

 

J = 86  - E     from equation 1

Substitute this along with A = 2E into equation 2

 

j + A = 104

86-E + 2E = 104

86 + E = 104

E = 18

 

From there you can easily determine J and A
