Yesterday, a mail-order firm's sales of sleeping bags totaled $3,840. A child's sleeping bag sold for $40, while the adult sleeping bag sold for $100. If 60 sleeping bags were sold altogether, how many of the child's sleeping bags were sold?

When you work a word problem like this use the money to set up one equation and the number to set up another 

equation.

Let c = child's sleeping bag and a= adult sleeping bag

 

 

40c + 100a= 3840

   c  + a     = 60

 

You can use elimination or susbtitution to solve this. I will be using elimination and will start my multiplying the bottom

equation by -100 to eliminate the a's.

 

40 c + 100 a =3840

-100c -100a = -6000 

__________________

-60c            = -2160

     c            =36

 

So, there were 36 children's sleeping bags sold.
