                          Liters Juice            Percent              Total

20% Juice                  x                    0.20                 0.20x

40% Juice                  y                    0.40                 0.40y

Mixture               x + y =40              0.35               0.35(40)

 

Get your equation from the "Total" Column:

 

0.20x + 0.40y = 0.35(40)

 

But: y = 40-x

 

0.20x + 0.40(40-x) = 0.35(40)

 

0.20x + 16 -0.40x = 14

 

-0.20x = 14-16 = -2

 

        x = 10 liters of A.

 

        y = 40 - x = 40 -(10) = 30 liters of B.
