Finding the mistake

Mark solved  the following problem as shown below:
Gas prices are projected to increase by 124% by April 2016, a gallon of gas currently cost $2.90.
What is the projected cost of a gallon of gas for April 2016?
1.24(2.90)=3.596=$3.60
The projected cost of a gallon of gas for April 2016 is $3.60.
What mistake did Mark make? Explain what his misunderstanding was, then correctly find the projected cost of a gallon of gas for April 2016.

Here we go again with frivolous down-votes.  We have 3 solutions, all giving the same correct answer ($6.50), with some getting voted down, and even multiple down votes, for the same answer.

Yes, so it has to be another tutor who cast the down vote.  It would not be coming from the student.  I just got a down vote on that transmission line problem from a few days ago, even though I worked it correctly and got the same answers that were given in advance to the student.  As you said a few days ago, there is an "epidemic" of down votes.
