Joan had 2.5 times as many books as I do.  You could also say she has 27 more books than I do.  How many do I have.  Please help show the work.  Thank you

Let x = the number of books that you have, y = the number of books that Joan has.  The given information translates into:

 

y = 2.5x

y = x + 27

 

Solve for x.

 

2.5x = x + 27

 

x = 18
