I invested a total of $50,000 a year ago. the first investment paid 2% and the second investment paid 5%. I made a total of $2050. How much did I invest at each rate?  please help work this problem out. Thank you.

a + b = 50,000

.02a + .05b = 2050

 

a = 50,000 - b

.02(50,000 - b) + .05b = 2050

1000 - .02b + .05b = 2050

.03b = 1050

b = 35,000

 

a = 50,000 - 35,000 = 15,000
