Vanessa, you must be precise. A point is written as (8,1). Perpendicular lines have opposite, reciprocal slopes.
2y = 4x + 12
y = 2x + 6
The slope of our new line will be -1/2
y - 1 = (-1/2)(x - 8)
y - 1 = (-1/2)x + 4
y = (-1/2)x + 5
Hope this helps!

@siena c. Thanks, this helps a lot.

@sienca c. Actually, David W's answer was correct because perpendicular slopes need to be reciprocal AND opposite signs. So the slope would be -1/2 because the reciprocal of 2/1 is 1/2 and the opposite sign would be -1/2. Hope this helps!

Siena C., you actually forgot that a perpendicular line's slope can be found by a formula, if m=slope. m=-1/m

Actually, that is incorrect. For starters, the slope would be 1/2 not -1/2 because the reciprocal of 2/1 would b 1/2. So the equation would be.... y-1=1/2(x-8) (multiply 1/2 by x and -8) y-1=1/2x - 4 (add 1 to each side) y=1/2x - 3 That is the correct answer06/21/19
