total income?

1)  Y/A = 1/2.  Therefore A = 2Y

 (Y+3000)/(A+3000) = 40/57

Substitute for A; now you have a proportional equation involving only variable Y. Cross-multiply and solve by Algebra.

 

2) let S = Salary.  After the cited expenses, the remainder is (2/7)S = 500; solve for S.
