9y/14 + 3/14 = 9/14

Multiply both sides by the common denominator, 14.
Then solve for y.
Go for it!

9y/14 + 3/14 = 9/14
9y + 3 = 9                multiply both sides by 14 (common denominator)
9y = 6                      subtract 3 from both sides
y = 6/9                     divide both sides by 9
y = 2/3                     reduce

Wiilliam R.

so you can just take 14 out of the equation then go from there

Well "take out" is not an algebraic operation. Multiply is.
An example:
2x/3 = 1/9
(9)(2x)/3 = (9)1/9      multiply both sides by LCD, 9
6x = 1                       simplify/reduce
x = 1/6                      divide both sides by 6
