If you have a linear expression in some variables, the powers of the variables are all 1.
Example:
3x + 4y + 9z = 3x1 + 4y1 + 9z1
If you have a constant expression, it is like having it multiplied by a variable to the power zero.
Example:
2 = 2(1) = 2(x0) = 2(y0) = 2(z0)
