To show work in an addition problem, line up the numbers vertically like this:
3870
92
7
+ 497
*Note: the ones place (orange) os lined up, the tens place (black) is lined up, the hundreds place is lined up (green) and the thousands place is lined up (grey)
Start from the right column and add up the digits: 0+2+7+7=16
There is only room for one digit below that column, so the next step is to write that digit and carry the one to the next column (see the small italicized one beneath the next column).
1
3870
92
7
+ 497
92
7
+ 497
6
Repeat that step for the next column, but also use the '1' carried over from the last step: 1+7+9+9=26. Write down the 6 at the bottom and carry the two to the next column.
2 1
3870
92
3870
92
7
+ 497
66
Repeat for the next column
1 2 1
3870
92
7
+ 497
466
3870
92
7
+ 497
466
And for the following column
1 2 1
3870
92
7
+ 497
4466
3870
92
7
+ 497
4466
