As part of your work as a gardener, you must decide how to use your kitchen garden. You assign 1/2 of the vegetable garden to the cultivation of the potato. You use 1/4 of the remaining acreage to grow corn. You then plant cucumbers in 1/3 of what is left. The rest of the vegetable garden is used to grow carrots. What fraction of the vegetable garden is used for carrots?

Entire garden: 1

Potato: 1/2 of garden 

Remainder: 1 - 1/2 = 1/2, so 1/4 of the remainder is used for corn: 1/4 * 1/2 = 1/8

Leftover: 1/2 - 1/8 = 3/8.

Cucumbers: 1/3 of the leftover gives us 3/8 * 1/3 = 3/24 = 1/8

Carrots: 1/2 - 1/8 - 1/8 = 1/4

 

1/4 of the garden is used for carrots.

 

Check: all parts must equal to 1. 1/2 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/4 = 1.
