Graphing 6x-y=1

I need to graph two points on a line. I am having trouble finding the two points of the inequality 6x-y=1 and actually getting those points right on the graph.

The easiest thing to do is to find the y- and x-intercepts.

The y-intercept is the value of y when x=0.

6x-y=1

[(6)(0)]-y=1

-y=1

Let's multiply both sides by -1...

(-1)(-y)=(1)(-1)

y=-1

(0,-1)

The x-intercept is the value of x when y=0.

6x-y=1

6x-0=1

6x=1

Let's multiply both sides by 6...

(6x)/6=1/6

x=1/6

(1/6,0)

Plot these two points, and draw a line connecting such.

You can check your work by verifying the slope.

Ax+By=C, neither A nor B equal zero and A is greater than zero.

The slope is -A/B.

-(6/-1)

Slope is 6/1, 6.

As your line increases six units, it also moves to the right one unit.
