Question

 I am in Algebra 2 Trig and doing systems of equations. I can not figure this out. 

 

Zack has two savings accounts with a total of $9,000. He withdrew 10% from one and 60% from
the other to buy his girlfriend an engagement ring. If the ring cost $2,175, find the remaining
balance in each account.

0.60x + 0.10(9000 - x) = 2175

0.6x + 900 - 0.1x = 2175

 

Can you solve for x and answer the question?

So let the 2 accounts be represented by x and y.

10 % of x is .10x and 60% of y is .60 y.

 

So x+y = 9000

.1x + ,6y = 2175       multiply by 10 to clear the decimals

 

x + y = 9000

x + 6y = 21750

 

Subtract the 2 equations to get

 

5y = 12750

y   = 2550

 

Substitute back in to find x + 2550 = 9000.......so x = 6450.

 

So the original accounts were 6450 and 2550....but 10% and 60% has been removed.

 

6450 - .10(6450) = 5805

2550 - .60(2550) = 1020

 

So those are the remaining balances after buying the ring.
