x/2 + x/3 = 1
3x + 2x = 6       multiply both sides by LCD, 6
5x = 6              combine like terms
x = 6/5             divide both sides by 5
 
Working together they need one hour twelve minutes.
 
PS. If you have not taken Algebra why are you posting an Algebra style problem?
