Question

In an opera theater, sections of seating consisting of three rows are being laid out. It is planned so each row will be two more seats than the one before it and 90 people must be seated in each section. How many people will be in the third row?

Answer 1

If n=first row

   n+2=second row

& n+4= third row

 

n + n+2 + n+4 = 90

3n + 6 = 90

      -6     -6

3n = 84

÷3   ÷3

 n = 28   [this is the first row though]

 

The second row, n + 2, has 30 people.

The third row, n + 4, has 32 people.

When practical, assign a variable to the value being sought (so you won't forget to solve for it later).

Third row = x

Second row = x-2

First row = x-4

 

90 people in each section:

   row1 + row2 + row3 = 90

    (x-4) + (x-2) + x = 90

     3x -6 = 90

      3x = 96

       x = 32

 

Check:

  Is   28+30+32 = 90   ?

             90 = 90   ?yes
