what is Y - 5 = 3 - 5?

What is the solution for that? im very confused.

Eliminate all integers on left side of the equation so that only y remains:

 

Add 5 to both sides of the equation

 

y - 5 + 5 = 3 - 5 +5

 

y = 3

The key is to isolate by moving the integer/s around the equal sign. These change to positive or negative once you move them around the sign.

 

y-5=3-5

y-5=-2

y=5-2

y=3

 

Now plug in the answer to assess if it is correct -

 

3-5=3-5
