If a Patient goes on a diet and loses 12 2/3 pounds one month, 81/4 pounds the next month, and 4 3/5 pounds the next month, how much total weight did he lose? Be sure to show answer as a mixed number with a reduced fraction

We need to add these mixed numbers by converting them to improper fractions

 

12 2/3 = 38/3

 

8 1/4 = 33/4

 

4 3/5 = 23/5

 

38/3 + 33/4 + 23/5

 

The common denominator is 60

 

= 20(38)/60 + 15(33)/60 + 12(23)/60

 

= (760 + 495 + 276)/60

 

= 1531/60

 

= 25 31/60 lb
