We need to take the difference in 2 numbers to find the degrees colder between the 2 cities. This seems complicated by the fact that one number is positive and the other is negative. However, this is easily accomplished by simple subtraction:
26 - (-4) {remember, when we subtract, we really change the sign of the second number and add the 2}.
So our problem becomes 26 + 4, which is equal to 30. So, the difference between -4 degrees and 26 degrees is a total of 30 degrees. (check this on a thermometer by just counting the degree lines from -4 to 26)
