Cars: Two cars leave from the same location and travel in opposite directions along a straight road. One car travels 30 miles per hour while the other travels at 45 miles per hour. How long will it take the two cars to be 255 miles apart?

Both cars travel for the same

amount of time = T

 

30T is distance for one of the cars

 

45T is the distance for the other car

 

Together they travel:

 

30T + 45T = 255 miles

 

         75T = 255

 

Divide both sides by 75

 

            T = 3.4 hours     to be 255 miles apart
