He had 1/2 to begin with and eats 1/4 of his original 1/2.

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8

He had 1/8 of the original pizza for breakfast.

Start with 1/2 pizza. If he eats 1/4 of this (half pizza), then the eats 1/4 of 1/2 of the total pizza. So we solve the problem by multiplying 1/4 times 1/2, to get 1/8 of the total pizza. (multiply numerators to get 1, multiply denominators to get 8)
