If the nail was 6 inches and each strike moved it by 2 inches, it would take 3 strikes (6 / 2) to finish the job. Likewise here we have a 7/8 inch nail, and each strike moves it by 1/16 inch. So to solve the problem, divide the total length by the length of each strike:
(7/8) / (1/16), which we invert the 2nd term and multiply: (7/8) x (16/1) = 7 x 2 = 14 strikes.
