I am not a math teacher, but I like playing with problems.  Here are a few more steps that may make it easier for you to understand:

Original Question: 1/3 (x-6) = 2/3

 

Step 1: Multiply both sides of the equation by 3                   (3* 1/3x) - (3* - 2) = 3 * 2/3

                  Result 1: 3/3x – 6 = 6/3 
                                                                                        x - 6 = 2

 

Step 2: Add 6 to both sides to isolate x                                x – 6 + 6 = 2 + 6

                                                                   Final Result: x = 8

Check your work by this equation: 8 - 6 + 6 = 2 + 6            8-0= 2+6
                                                                                                8=8
