There are two pieces of information given.
Julio has 5 more dollars than Dan
Altogether, Julio and Dan have 19 dollars
Here is another way to interpret these:
Julio's money = Dan's money + $5
Julio's money + Dan's money = $19
If we refer to Julio as the variable "J" and Dan as the variable "D", they could be written as a system of equations:
J = D + 5
J + D = 19
Notice how the first equation has "J" isolated on one side of the equation, and the expression "D + 5" on the other side. We can substitute the expression "D + 5" into the place of "J" in the second equation (this is called solving a system of equations using substitution). Then, solve for "D".
J + D = 19
(D + 5) + D = 19
2D + 5 = 19
2D = 14
D = 7
Now, plug "7" in for "D" in either of the equations to solve for "J" (I will show you the work for both, but you only need to use one. I'm just showing you that both of them will give you the same answer)
J = D + 5
J = 7 + 5
J = 12
J + D = 19
J + 7 = 19
J = 12
There you have it, Dan has $7 and Julio has $12
