The object is to get everything except for "h" on one side of the equation.

 

The equation says that everything on the right side is being multiplied by 1/2.

 

What do we have to multiply times 1/2 to get 1?  The answer is 2.

 

So multiply both sides by 2 to get rid of the fraction.

 

2A = (a+b)h

 

Now we are multiplying h times (a+b) so to get rid of (a+b) we have to divide both sides by that term.

 

(a+b)/(a+b)  is 1

 

So you are left with:  2A/(a+b) = h

A=1/2(a+b)h is what you have to begin with. What I will now describe works for many other formulas, so concentrate on seeing the process as a method.

 

What you must do, as requested, is solve for h, which is involved in an expression on the right side of this formula.

In that expression, the order of operations to evaluate it, if you knew all the individual values for a, b and h, would be

first, add a and b

second, multiply by one half (or equivalently, divide by two)

third, take that result and multiply by h.

 

What you must do is to REVERSE THE PROCESS, undoing these operations until h is the only thing left.

1) divide by (a+b)

2) multiply by two

 

What you then get is h = 2A(a+b)

 

in other words, kill off the half by multiplying, and kill off the (a+b) by dividing.
