if the scale of a map states that 1cm equals 74km, and the distance on the map between two towns is 4cm, then you need to do the following:
Multiply 4 by 74, which will give you the answer. Remember the unit of measurement is km.
You can also treat this problem as a proportion and solve by:
- setting 1/74 = 4/x
- cross multiply to get x = 4*74
- x = 296 km.
