One-quarter inch represents 60 miles on a map. Approximate the distance between two cities that are 4/3 inches apart on the map.
The exact answer is 320 miles.
To "approximate" the answer, use values that are near the values in the problem, but make the math so easy that you can "do it in your head."
Approximation 1 (start rough):
4/3 [that is, four-thirds] is a little more than 5/4 [five-fourths]. If one-fourth is 60, then five-fourths is 300. It is a little more than that.
Approximation 2:
If 60 is one-fourth, 240 is one inch. 1/3 of 240 is 80. So, one inch + one-fourth inch is 240+80=320.
Note: that Approximation 2 is Exact, so no further approximations are needed.
Some problems seen so easy that approximation is not needed, but learning to approximate will help you greatly to feel confident that the answer you got in complicated calculation is "in the ball park."
