CMU Grad to Help You Get the Big Ideas + Little Things in Science/Math
Ashley,
The basic idea you'll need to build upon is: Cost = Quantity bought * Unit rate
Turning this basic idea around a little gives you the related idea for what Unit rates are:
Unit rates should be remembered as How much something costs / How many things are in it that you get. Like $1.08 for a dozen eggs has a unit rate of $1.08/12 eggs (or $0.09 an egg). So the cost of 18 eggs should be 18 eggs * ($1.08/12 eggs), right?
Once you get the hang of using these two related ideas together, you can then apply this to any larger group of things by adding together the different costs to get the total cost. So,
Cost of golf balls + Cost of tees = Total Cost of golf balls and tees, right?
18 golf balls * ($8.95 / 8 golf balls) + 250 tees * ($6.50 / 50 tees) = Total Cost
Try simplifying, using the correct order of operations just to be safe, and see if you get a reasonable answer.
Hope that helps! David S.
