Zaniya, Safee, and Keanndra went shopping on Sunday. Together, they spent a total of $140. Zaniya spent 3 times as much as Safee. Keanndra spent $5 more than Safee. How much did each person spend

Let     x = amount Safee spent

Let    3x = amount Xaniya spent ... (3 times Safee)

Let  x+5 = amount Keandra spent ... 5 more than Safee

 

Total is $140.

Here is our equation:

 

   x + 3x + x + 5 = 140

   5x + 5 = 140

   5x = 140 - 5

   5x = 135

   x = 27

 

Safee spent $27

Keandra spent 5 more than Safee, or 27+5 = $32

Zaniya spent 3 times Safee, or 3(27) = $81

 

27 + 32 + 81 = $140
