Let x=the number
Translate:
"two subtracted from twice a number is the same as four times the number plus six" means
-2 + 2 * x = 4 * x + 6
We would normally write the subtraction second, so
2x - 2 = 4x + 6
The math:
2x - 2 = 4x + 6
-2x -2 = 6 [subtract 4x from both sides]
-2x = 8 [add 2 to both siees]
x = -4 [divide both sides by (-2)]
Check:
Is 2(-4) - 2 = 4(-4) + 6 ?
-8 -2 = -16 + 6 ?
-10 = -10 ?yes
