If I understood the question correctly, then it goes like this:

 

The mean of these 5 numbers is the sum of these numbers divided by 5: so we have (400 + 3a)/5 = 100.

 

Multiply both sides by 5 to get : 400 + 3a = 500.

 

subtract 400 from both sides to get: 3a = 100.

 

Divide both sides by 3 to get: a = 33.33
