Use the equation

 

x = -b / (2a)   ---->   x-coordinate of the vertex

 

 

Then evaluate the function at the x-coordinate of the vertex to find the y-coordinate of the vertex.

y = x² + 6x + 8

 

For quadratic equation purposes in format of

y = ax² + bx + c

We have a=1, b=6, c=8

 

The x coordinate of the vertex is found by

x = -b/2a

 

-6/2(1) = -6/2 = -3

 

The y coordinate is the output of the equation when x = -3

 

y = (-3)² + 6(-3) + 8 = 9 - 18 + 8 = -1

 

The vertex of the parabola is at  V = (-3, -1)
