Hi Aja,
Here's how you solve this.
If Sally can paint the house in 4 hours, in one hour she can paint 1/4 of the house.
If John can paint the house in 6 hours, in one hour he can paint 1/6 of the house.
To see how much of the house they can paint together in one hour, we add these together.
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x
(1/x is how much of the house they can paint together in one hour. Therefore x is the number of hours it will take them both to pain the house)
1/4 + 1/6 = 1/x
3/12 + 2/12 = 1/x (Find Least Common Denominator)
5/12 = 1/x (Add the fractions)
5/12 x = 1 (Multiply both sides by X)
X = 12/5 = 2.4 hours (Divide both sides by 5/12)
Together it will take them 2hours and 24min to paint the house.
Hope this helps!

If you were to write out 5/12 and 1/x, you would have to find x by crossing the numbers so it would be 5(x)=12(1) so in the end you would get 5x=12. Then to fully get the answer, you would divide 5 to 12 and that would mean x=12/5. I hope my explanation helped.

You can think about it as velocities. For example. If a car goes 60miles/hour, how fast will it go if you add 3miles/hour? it will be 63miles/hour. If you want the inverse of those units and you do: hour/60miles + hour/3miles, you will get the wrong answer. So if you want to invert the units you do 1/(60mile/hour + 3miles/hour). Same with the painting house problem. When someone takes 4 hours to paint a house, you technically have a velocity of 1house/4hours, which is 0.25house/hour.

Hey, how do you know when to use that formula? Do you just flip the answer upside down like 5/12=12/5? Please explain11/23/19
