(√(6)x+7) +3 = x+5 √(6)x + 10 = x + 5 (√(6) - 1)x = -5 x = -5/((√(6) - 1)) * (√(6) + 1)/(√(6) + 1) = -5 * (√(6) + 1)/5 = -√(6) - 1

I believe that the original problem has mis-parenthesization.
(√6x+7) +3 = x+5 probably should be √(6x+7) +3 = x+5
in which case the student should isolate the radical on one side, then square both sides, etc
