Bob takes the subway to work and uses an escalator at the railway station. If Bob runs up 8 steps of the escalator, then it takes him 46.5 seconds to reach the top of the escalator. If he runs up 13 steps of the escalator, then it takes him only 39.0 seconds to reach the top. How many seconds would it take Bob to reach the top if he did not run up any steps of the escalator?

Whatwhat I.

Another way to solve this.

Running 8 steps = 46.5 seconds.

Running 13 steps = 39 seconds.

This means standing still for 5 extra steps adds 7.5 seconds, or 1.5 seconds per step, standing.

13- 8 = 5 steps.
46.5- 39 = 7.5 seconds.
7.5s / 5 steps = 1.5s per step.

If he didn't run those 8 steps, means adding back 8 steps to that time.

Total time to the top running 8 steps = 46.5seconds.
8 x 1.5s = 12 seconds.
46.5s + 12 s = 58.5 seconds

Double check with the time from running 13 steps.

Total time to top running 13 steps = 39 seconds. Add back 13 steps.

13 x 1.5s = 19.5 seconds.
39s + 19.5s = 58.5 seconds.

The value of b = 58.5 and this is the actual time it takes to reach the top just by standing still.
