This problem is related to hiking ("the hiking problem"). This solution is a nice outline! (text feature)
There are known amounts and an unknown amount.
Known:
- total length of hiking trail
- length of trail hiked so far
Unknown:
- (What could we possible want to know that we don't already know? -- how far we have yet to go)
Note: The answer for (1) came from (2) and we determined it because we read the whole problem before we started to answer anything. Also, we don't have to answer parts in order!
Well, I'd guess that our answer for (4) would be in kilometerssince the two known amounts are in kilometers.
Now, your answer to (3) depends on you, the course, the teacher, etc. Often a descriptive name like RemainingDistance would be used in a computer program. A mnemonic (hey! there's a big word) like D is good. But in algebra we often settle for x [oh, dullsville!].
Put this into the outline, then read and re-read it and modify it until it is a good description of your way to solve the hiking problem.
