the zoo charges 9 dollars per adult and 3 dollars per child . If 227 people went to the zoo and the total was 1017 how many adults and children attended.

Let a = # of adults

Let c = # of children

 

   (Equation 1) ->  a  +  b = 227

   

   (Equation 2) -> 9a + 3c = 1017

 

Solve using elimination method.  Multiplication equation 1 by -3, then add the 2 resulting equations

 

   -3a  -  3b = -681

     9a + 3b = 1017

   -----------------------------

    6a  = 336

      a  = 56

 

56 adults attended.

 

227 - 56 = 171

 

171 children attended

 

CHECK:

 

171(3) + 9(56) = 1017
