"50 km in a day" is a speed(rate)
The problem asks you for an equivalent number of km per year. The applicable constant is:
1 = (365 days)/(1 year) = (1 year)/(365 days) [choose the one so that units cancel; assume 365 exactly]
To change units without changing the value, we use the Multiplicative Identity (that is, 1). Any number multiplied by +1 remains the same.
50 km in a day
50 km per 1 day
(50 km) / (1 day)
( (50 km) / (1 day) ) * 1
( (50 km) / (1 day) ) * ( (365 days)) / (1 year) ) [days will cancel out]
( (50 km) * 365 ) / (1 year)
( 18250 km ) / (1 year)
18250 km per year
18,250 km in 1 year
Note: Units are very, very important ! (see -- http://spacemath.gsfc.nasa.gov/weekly/6Page53.pdf )
