A stray dog ate 12 of your muffins. That
was 3/10 of all of them! With how many did
you start?

Let x = starting number of muffins

 

Since 12 were eaten, that leaves x - 12 muffins remaining

That represents 3/10 of of the original number

 

   (3/10)x = 12

 

    3x/10 = 12/1

 

Cross multiply

 

     3x(1) = 10(12)

     3x = 120

      x = 40

    

There were originally 40 muffins
