A fisherman comes back from a long day at sea with a catch of flounder and lobster. Currently, lobster is worth $15.44 per kilogram, and flounder is worth $6.80 per kilogram. He caught three times as much flounder as lobster. If he is paid $250.88 for his catch, how many kilograms of flounder did he bring home?

You can set up an equation to solve this problem.

 

I would say x=kg of fish

 

15.44x + 6.80(3x) = 250.88

 

If you solve for x you will get 7.

 

So there are x amount of lobster and 3x amount of flounder

 

-> 7kg of lobster and (3*7) = 21kg of flounder

 

21kg of flounder is 3 times as much as the 7kg of lobster and it adds up to $250.88

     x = kilograms of lobster caught

   3x = kilograms of flounder caught

 

    6.80(flounder) + 15.44(lobster) = 250.88

    6.80(3x) + 15.44(x) = 250.88

    20.40x + 15.44x = 250.88

    35.84x = 250.88

             x = 250.88/35.84

             x = 7

 

So he caught 7 kg of lobster and 21 kg pg flounder
