We can set up 2 equations and substitute one variable for another to solve
x+y = 12 and
x-y = 14
if we solve for x in the second equation
x = 14 + y
then plug that into the first equation
(14+y)+y = 12
simplify and solve
14 + 2y = 12
2y = 12-14
2y = -2
y= -1
x = 14 + y
x = 14 + (-1)
x = 13
check
13+-1 = 12
13- -1 = 14
