y = x/4             [y = f(x)]

(number of dollars) = (number of quarters)/4

 

 

This is true because 1 is the Multiplicative Identity.  You may multiply any value by 1 and change the units without changing the value.  In this problem:

     1  =  (4 quarters)/(1 dollar)  =  (1 dollar)/(4 quarters)           [choose the ratio needed]

       (number of quarters)*1

       (number of quarters) * ((1 dollar)/(4 quarters))
