The following diagram shows an overhead view of your backyard. You wish to cover two-fifths of the area not including the BBQ or pool in order to build a patio, Bricks cost $0.75 each, and each brick covers 1/4 square foot. You also wish to put up a picket fence around the area of the backyard that does not face your house. Fencing materials are $11.35 per linear foot. Update: If you wish to purchase all of the materials at Home Depot, and sales tax is 8%, how much will the entire project cost?

Area of yard = L x W = 35' x 55' = 1925sf

Area of BBQ = L x W = 9' x 12' = 108sf

Area of pool = h•(b1 + b2)/2 = 17'•(24'+30')/2 = 17'•27' = 459sf

Area to be covered = (1925sf - 459sf - 108sf)•2/5 = 543.2sf

Bricks = 4 bricks/sf • 543.2sf • $0.75/brick = $1629.60

Fencing = (35' + 35' + 55')•$11.35/f = $1418.75

Cost subtotal = $1629.60 + $1418.75 = $3048.35

Sales tax = $3048.35 • 0.08 = $243.87

Grand total = $3292.22
