"netflix offers1 dvd at time for 8.99 a month and a 2dvd plan for 4.99 a month. during one week 250 new subscribers paid 1975 for these plans. how many of each plan were purchased?"

If x subscribers purchased the $8.99 plan then

250-x is the number that purchased the $4.99 plan

 

The moneys paid will be:

8.99x + 4.99(250-x) = 1975

Solve for x

 

8.99x - 4.99x + 1247.5 = 1975

4x = 1975-1247.5

4x = 727.5

x = 727.5/4

x = 181.875

 

Since this isn't going to come out exact on an integer answer,

I would say 182 persons purchased the $8.99 plan

 

250-182 = 68 persons purchasing the $4.99 plan

 

182(8.99) + 68(4.99) = $1975.50

Note:  If you had gone the other way with the rounding and

said 181 persons bought the $8.99 plan and 69 the $4.99 plan

the total would have worked out to $1971.50
